Community
Development

As a regional planning organization, MACOG seeks to engage communities to think about the synergies between community programs, projects and assets, and how each can have a great impact on the entire community and region. MACOG strives to create community plans that are holistic in design, realistic to the community, strategic, and feasible for implementation. MACOG has a strong history of regional planning and is committed to providing exceptional and innovative community planning in northern Indiana. Our Planning Approach can be defined in three words: Distinctive, Creative, and Engaging.

Comprehensive Planning

Comprehensive planning is the integral procedure for community development that brings government officials, business leaders, and citizens together to build communities of lasting value and one that enrich people’s lives. Planning is a collaborative process that empowers communities to envision the future, address the challenges, and create solutions that offer better choices for where and how people live, work, and play. An outcome of planning is the Comprehensive Plan, which creates a road map for communities to realize their vision and aspirations through goals and action policies as they relate to transportation, housing, economic development, land use, utilities, public facilities, parks, and open space. Additionally, the comprehensive plan is a policy tool to guide local decision-makers through land use and development decisions, and outside organizations to ensure their initiatives align with the community’s vision.

Parks Master Plans

In today's modern communities, parks play a vital role in attracting new and retaining existing resident. Parks are also an essential element to creating an active and healthy community. The MACOG region boasts of high-quality parks in many of our cities, towns, and counties. It is important for these communities to plan for future needs and improvements, which is why MACOG offers our expertise and experience in developing 5-Year Park Master Plans. These plans not only help to identify future projects, but open up communities to be eligible to other state grants for implementation.

Studies and Initatives

As part of MACOG's Mission, we help local governments study and attempt to resolve issues that are important to each community. This may result in a plan, but often it will take the form of a study or initative. Each community and issue is unique, and MACOG works with local leaders, stakeholders and the public to better understand the concerns and work collaboratively to identify strategic solutions. The following are examples of recent work done in local communities.

Parking Studies

A parking study will help a community understand their current and future parking needs by assessing current conditions, engaging the community, and analyzing future parking demand in order to develop and implement parking management strategies.
