Michiana on the Move: 2040 Transportation Plan
Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) like the MACOG are required to develop long-range Transportation Plans (TP) with a minimum 20 year horizon. The Transportation Plan documents how the MPO Boards plan to invest local, state, and federal transportation dollars in highways and mass transit projects. The Transportation Plan should include long-range and short-range program strategies and actions that lead to the development of an integrated intermodal transportation system that facilitates the efficient movement of people and goods.
The Michiana on the Move: 2040 Transportation Plan identifies projects and plans to be developed in the four-county region and sets the goals for MPO region by establishing the needs of the region, both existing and future.
The 2040 Transportation Plans address the following:
Policies, strategies, and projects for the future
A system level approach by considering roadways, transit, non-motorized transportation, and intermodal connections
Projected demand for transportation services over 20 years
Regional land use, development, housing, and employment goals and plans
Cost estimates and reasonably available financial sources for operation, maintenance, and capital investments
Ways to preserve existing roads and facilities and make efficient use of the existing system
The plan includes primarily projects for roads and highways such as road reconstructions, new road constructions, added travel lanes, intersection improvements, grade separations, and lane configurations. Additional plans for public transit and bicycle and pedestrian facilities will be developed in the next year.
